What Movers Won’t Move?
Professional moving companies are lifesavers when it comes to relocating your home or office. Our movers will pack every single item you own, carry boxes and heavy furniture up and down the stairs, and carefully load and unload the moving truck during snow, rain, or sunshine perfectly. However, there are certain items we are unfortunately not able to move due to many reasons.
The professional packers at Zip Moving & Storage will make your moving process simple and stress-free. Our expert movers are well versed in the items that are not allowed to be loaded onto the moving truck. Read on to discover which items are off-limits, due to safety or legal reasons, for movers to transport
“For safety and insurance reasons we cannot allow specific items to be packed inside the boxes or loaded onto the truck.”
The categories of prohibited items or belongings that cannot be loaded into the moving truck are:
FLAMMABLE AND COMBUSTIBLE ITEMS
Some flammable items are used every day and stored casually at home. These belongings may be safe to store in a garage or under the sink but are not safe when stored in a moving truck. It goes without saying, our movers will ensure the best and the safest relocation for your household belongings, therefore we can not take any flammables since it’s extremely dangerous if liquids spill and ignite.
The following flammable items cannot legally be transported across state lines:
- Bleach
- Matches
- Ammonia
- Lead-acid batteries
- Fireworks
- Gasoline and kerosene
- Lighter fluids
- Motor oil
- Nail polish remover
- Paint and varnish
- Filled or half-filled propane tanks (empty tanks are ok)
- Signal flares
- Sterno (canned heat ethanol gel)
If you do have anything hazardous or vaguely toxic in your home, we advise disposing of it properly before you move and restock once you’ve arrived and settled at your new place.
Household chemicals
Compressed gases and powerful chemicals are hazardous in everyday life. The volatility of these items is even higher when they are transported. If these items spill or become punctured, they can cause a hazardous environment for the movers and damage other items in transport. Customers that are knowledgeable in handling household chemicals and are aware of how to safely pack and store them may transport these items on their own, but in no circumstance should they be loaded onto the moving truck.
The following gasses and chemicals cannot be transported by movers:
- Aerosol sprays – spray paint, spray cleaners, hairspray
- Oxygen tanks
- Fire extinguishers
- Weed killers and gardening chemicals
- Pesticides and insecticides
- Cleaning chemicals
- Pool chemicals
HOUSEHOLD ITEMS FOR HOMEOWNERS TO TRANSPORT
If you are moving soon we advise you to start eating your leftovers from the fridge now! Although food is not as nearly as dangerous as hazardous materials, it can cause a lot of damage and a huge mess. We advise you to pack the food items you wish to move into a large cooler and transport them in your personal vehicle. If you don’t want to let the food go to waste, another great idea is donating it to your local food bank. In addition to dangerous items, it is important for homeowners to transport some common household items on their own.
FRAGILE AND PERISHABLE ITEMS
The following food items do not travel well and often cause a mess:
- Food stored in mason jars or Tupperware
- Food in containers that can crack or leak
- Fresh produce
- Frozen food
- Alcohol
Regulations about the transportation of liquor may vary from state to state. We understand some of our customers may have expensive wine collections and top-shelf liquor they would like transported to their new home, in this instance the best way is securely packing it and doing it yourself or contacting specialty companies that are experts in that field and transport liquor.
Some moving companies may or may not allow the transport of alcohol.
Once in a while, our agents would get a request about moving different items other than household items, that we, unfortunately, can not. Below is a list of commonly asked requests we receive at Zip Moving & Storage:
- Hot tubs – Unfortunately we don’t move hot tubs, the reason being that they are very large and our movers are not experts in handling them due to that we absolutely want to avoid any damage being caused during the transportation.
- Mobile homes – Moving mobile homes is not as easy as it seems. Unfortunately, we as a moving company must obtain, set up permits to state transportation permits to be allowed to do this kind of a movie.
- Cars/vehicles – It takes special equipment and the right expertise to ship a car. Vehicles also take a lot of space and it’s costly. Calling a specific company for shipping cars separately is your best option.

Tread on the side of caution and do not pack the following items:
