For an accurate estimate, customers must make a list of all items to be moved. This detailed list becomes the inventory list and will be used by both customers and movers to keep the moving process organized.
ADDING TO THE INVENTORY LIST
The inventory list is generated when the moving estimate is prepared by the movers. The moving estimate can be created in several different ways; customers can choose between a phone estimate, video estimate, website estimate, or an in-home estimate. After the estimate is conducted, the movers will draft a moving quote based upon the inventory list collected.
How can you add additional items?
- Phone Estimate – The staff will call the customer and go through the belongings. Details are important so this phone call may take a while to discuss the relevant points.
- Video Estimate – A video call will be scheduled and the staff will do a virtual walkthrough of the customer’s home while the inventory list is created.
- Website Estimate – Customers choose the types of items to transport and decide the number of boxes required. This estimate is preferable to the phone estimate as customers can take their time to determine what should be included.
- In-Home Estimate – If the home is within 50 miles of a Zip Moving & Storage warehouse, customers are able to schedule an in-home estimate. This free estimate allows a professional mover to examine the belongings in person and assemble a detailed inventory list to create an accurate estimate.
HOW THE INVENTORY LIST IS CREATED
In a perfect world, the list for moving would be all-inclusive and movers would be provided a detailed list of everything to transport.
Unfortunately, moving causes upheaval, and customers may forget to include items that need to be transported while booking the move. Even the most detail-oriented customers may forget something! Zip Moving & Storage understands the stressful time our customers are enduring and are here to help.
Whether the items are added on moving day or at a time prior, it is important that customers provide as much detail as possible.
The moving estimate is derived from the inventory list. When items are added to the inventory list, the price of the move will increase. Local moves are billed hourly and long-distance items are billed by weight, so the prices will change differently depending on the type of move.

ADDING ITEMS WHEN MOVING LOCALLY
If more items are added to the list on moving day, the movers will need more time to load the added items. Since local moving customers are charged per 15 minutes, the price will increase.
The time it takes for the movers to pack, load and unload the additional items will depend on a number of factors, such as accessibility, stair count or distance from the truck to the house.
The change in the price will depend on how many items are added to the list. The price for every 15 minutes varies between $24 and $40.
Original Weight | Old Cost ($0.70 per pound) | Added Items | Actual Weight | New Cost ($0.70 per pound) |
5000 lbs | $3500 | 5 chairs x 50 Lbs | 5250 Lbs | $3675 |
Cost is increased as movers spend more time on the job

ADDING ITEMS WHEN MOVING LONG DISTANCE
Since the long-distance moving quote is based on the weight of the shipment, adding more items/weight will increase the price of the move. The heavier the added items are, the greater the change in the price will be.

CAN MOVERS CHARGE BY VOLUME?
Long-distance moves performed by Zip Moving & Storage are charged by the shipment weight. There are companies that determine the moving cost based on the volume of the shipment, but this way of determining the moving cost can vary dramatically since the volume is determined by the moving crew.
